One of the biggest behind-the-scenes projects for our farm has officially taken a major step forward.

Back in January 2026, we began planning our high-capacity well system to support the long-term development of our agroforestry orchard in Brodhead, Wisconsin. After state permitting and months of planning, the well was officially drilled in March/April 2026 by Sam’s Well Drilling.

The completed well reaches a depth of approximately 360 feet and is estimated around 75 gallons per minute — infrastructure designed to support the future irrigation needs of the farm as thousands of perennial trees and shrubs become established.

This month, South Central Well & Pump, Inc. completed installation of the pump system as we continue preparing for underground orchard irrigation infrastructure.

The farm currently includes plans for:

🌰 Over 900+ Chestnut trees
🍈 More than 1,500+ PawPaw trees
🍅 Specialty fruits including Persimmon, Jujube, and Quince

🫐 Thousands of perennial berries and shrubs including:

Aronia,
Honeyberry,
Black Currants,
Red Currants,
Pink & White Currants,
Juneberries,
Elderberries,
Hazelnuts,
Bush Cherries,
Seaberries, and
Goumi.

🌲 Windbreak and support species including White Spruce, Cedar, Maple, Fir, Magnolia, Lilac, and Hybrid Poplar to help improve biodiversity, pollinator habitat, and long-term farm resilience.

Initial water quality testing also came back excellent, with negative coliform bacteria results and very low nitrate levels.

A lot of visitors will eventually see the fruit, flowers, and harvests… but infrastructure projects like this are the foundation that make a long-term perennial farm possible.
