π° Farm News & Orchard Updates
These photos document the installation of our orchard irrigation system, including more than 6,000 feet of mainline, manifold lines, communication wire, risers, and supporting infrastructure that will help deliver water and nutrients to thousands of future trees and shrubs across the farm.
π° Orchard Irrigation Milestone: More Than 6,000 Feet of Irrigation Infrastructure Installed
This season marked one of the biggest milestones yet at Nuts About Dee’s Berries.
After years of planning, designing, permitting, fundraising, and preparing the land, we have completed installation of more than 6,000 feet of orchard irrigation infrastructure across the farm.
The project included nearly 2,000 feet of irrigation mainline, approximately 4,000 feet of manifold and distribution lines, and the communication wire that will allow the irrigation controller to communicate with field valves and automate water delivery throughout the farm.
While visitors may someday see thriving berry patches, chestnut trees, pollinator habitat, and abundant harvests, much of the most important work happens underground. This orchard irrigation system will serve as the backbone of the farm, helping support thousands of trees and shrubs for decades to come.
The Infrastructure Behind Every Harvest
When people think about a berry farm, they often picture baskets of fresh fruit, beautiful blossoms, and rows of productive plants.
What they don’t always see is the tremendous amount of infrastructure required before the first harvest ever takes place.
Before the first currant is picked, before the first chestnut drops, and before the first customer visits the farm, there are countless hours of planning, engineering, trenching, pipe installation, and construction that make it all possible.
Installing an orchard irrigation system is one of the most important investments we can make in the long-term success of the farm.
Why Orchard Irrigation Matters
Young trees and shrubs require consistent moisture while establishing healthy root systems. Although we hope for timely rainfall, Wisconsin weather can be unpredictable.
A properly designed orchard irrigation system helps ensure that water is delivered where it is needed most while minimizing waste and improving efficiency.
As the farm matures, this infrastructure will help support thousands of perennial plants, including chestnuts, currants, aronia, bush cherries, elderberries, pawpaws, persimmons, juneberries, goumi, and many other crops that will eventually call this farm home.
The completed system also lays the foundation for future irrigation automation, helping us manage water more efficiently while reducing labor requirements as the farm continues to grow.
More Than Just Pipe in the Ground
While more than 6,000 feet of irrigation infrastructure is an accomplishment in itself, this project represents something much larger.
This irrigation system is another step toward building a resilient agroforestry farm focused on perennial food production, environmental stewardship, and long-term sustainability.
Every major project completed today creates opportunities for future generations to enjoy locally grown food, educational experiences, pollinator habitat, and a thriving agricultural landscape.
Many of the most important investments on a farm are never seen by visitors. The irrigation system now buried beneath the soil is one of those investments. Years from now, healthy trees, productive shrubs, and reliable harvests will owe much of their success to the infrastructure being installed today.
A Team Effort
Projects like this don’t happen alone.
A special thank you goes to the teams at Piping Pro Plumbing, Trickle-Eez Irrigation, and Netafim for their expertise, support, and hard work throughout the installation process.
We are also grateful to our family, friends, advisors, consultants, and supporters who continue to help turn this vision into reality.
A project of this scale requires many hands, countless hours, and a shared commitment to building something that will last for generations.
What's Next?
With the orchard irrigation system now installed, the focus shifts to bringing the farm’s long-term vision to life.
Over the coming years, this infrastructure will help support thousands of trees and shrubs as they mature into a productive agroforestry system featuring berries, nuts, fruits, pollinator habitat, and educational opportunities for the community.
The irrigation system may be hidden underground, but its impact will be visible in every future harvest.
Today, we celebrate a major milestone.
Tomorrow, we continue building the future.
