Our New Farm Building Is Taking Shape! πŸ—οΈ

The shell of our new farm building is officially complete! πŸŽ‰

Our original β€œone-month build” apparently had a very loose relationship with the calendar. πŸ˜‚ It took quite a bit longer than we expected, but it feels pretty darn good to finally have the building standing and enclosed!

There’s still a LOT to do. Next up are projects like septic, parking, concrete, utilities and finishing portions of the interior. For now, it’s mostly a big empty shell β€” but we have some pretty exciting plans for what it will eventually become.

This farm building will be the working hub of Nuts About Dee’s Berries and our 42-acre food forest and U-pick farm.

🌱 Space for washing, handling and preparing our farm-grown fruit
🫐 A future farm store featuring what we grow and other local products
🚜 Equipment, harvest and farm storage
πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ Space to support workshops, demonstrations and educational opportunities
🧺 A home base for our future U-pick operation, farm tours and events
🌳 And, most importantly, infrastructure that will help us grow and manage thousands of chestnuts, pawpaws, persimmons, currants, honeyberries, juneberries, aronia, bush cherries, elderberries and more.

We’re building something a little different here near Brodhead, Wisconsin β€” a diversified agroforestry farm and food forest where people will eventually be able to experience perennial agriculture firsthand.

We want you to be able to pick fruit you may have never tasted before, learn how it grows, wander among the trees and shrubs, attend a workshop, bring the kids for a farm tour, and maybe leave with a few ideas for growing food at home.

There is still a long way to go before all of that becomes reality. The trees and shrubs need to grow right along with the infrastructure. But piece by piece, this crazy idea we started with is beginning to look like an actual farm. ❀️🌱

Upcoming updates

The building may finally be enclosed, but things are about to get busy around here!

Over the next several months, we’ll be working on the septic system, parking area, concrete, utilities and interior spaces, including the beginnings of our future farm store and produce handling areas.

And then comes the really exciting part: Spring 2027 planting. 🌱

Thousands of chestnuts, pawpaws, persimmons, juneberries, honeyberries, currants, aronia, bush cherries and other perennial crops will begin making their way into the fields as our 48-acre food forest starts taking shape.

We’ll be bringing you along for all of it β€” building the farm, planting the food forest, meeting some unusual fruits, and eventually getting ready to welcome our first visitors.

We’re just getting started. 🌳

Optional Closing Line

(Use only if relevant)

β€œThis is one of the reasons we chose these crops for our farm.”

Fun Fact!

Chestnuts are nutritionally more like a grain or potato than most other nuts!

Unlike walnuts, pecans and almonds, chestnuts are relatively low in fat and high in complex carbohydrates.

We’ll eventually have more than 800 chestnut trees growing throughout our food forest β€” and yes, you’ll be able to pick them! 🌳🌰
