Wisconsin Uniform Building Permit showing “PERMIT ISSUED”
📰 Nuts About Dee’s Berries — Farm Update
After months of planning, reviews, and approvals, our farm building permit has officially been issued. While it may look like paperwork on the surface, this milestone represents the final green light before construction can begin. More importantly, it allows us to move from planning into physical progress on the farm.
🏗️ Farm Building Permit Issued
Earlier this season, our farm building plans received state approval. Now, with the building permit officially issued, we are officially cleared to move forward with construction.
As a result, this milestone marks the transition from design and compliance into on-the-ground development. Although we are currently waiting on concrete scheduling and site preparation, having the permit in hand ensures that progress can continue without regulatory delays once conditions align.
🧱 What This Permit Allows Us to Build
With the farm building permit issued, we are authorized to construct a permanent structure designed to support both farm operations and future public access. This building is a critical piece of long-term infrastructure for Nuts About Dee’s Berries.
Specifically, the permitted building will support:
Core Farm Operations
Secure storage for farm equipment, tools, and supplies
Dedicated space for staging, maintenance, and seasonal work
Protection for equipment and materials year-round
Farm Store & On-Farm Sales
In addition, the building includes space for a future farm store where we plan to offer:
Jams, jellies, and preserves made from our fruit
Wines and other value-added products
Farm merchandise and seasonal offerings
Kitchen & Sampling Area
To support both visitors and harvest logistics, the building layout also allows for:
A small kitchen and preparation area for sampling and tastings
Space to test recipes and introduce new products to the public
A processing area to clean and sanitize berries and nuts when needed
Cooler and freezer storage to temporarily hold harvested produce
A shipping and loading area for special orders or limited distribution
Although we are primarily a U-pick farm, having this flexibility allows us to adapt as harvest volumes increase and opportunities arise.
🚜 Public Access & Visitor Comfort
Because our farm is designed to welcome visitors, the building will also include:
Public restrooms for U-pick customers and event guests
Infrastructure to safely support on-farm traffic during busy seasons
This ensures that as more people visit the farm, we can offer a comfortable, well-organized experience.
🌰 Processing, Storage & Shipping Flexibility
Although we are primarily a U-pick farm, flexibility matters.
Therefore, the building also includes:
A processing area to clean and sanitize berries and nuts when needed
Cooler and freezer storage for harvested produce
A shipping and loading area for special orders or limited distribution
This space will play a key role in future U-pick days and seasonal events, which we share more about on our Join Us at the Farm page.
🌰 Why This Matters for a Perennial Farm
On a perennial farm, infrastructure decisions are made with decades in mind. Because our trees and shrubs take years to reach full production, having permanent systems in place early ensures smoother harvests, safer public access, and more resilient operations over time.
This building supports the crops and experiences highlighted throughout our Harvest Calendar and Our Farm Harvest Chart, while also reinforcing the long-term vision we share on our About Us page.
🔗 How This Fits Into Our Bigger Picture
This permit is one piece of a broader development timeline that includes soil preparation, cover cropping, irrigation planning, and phased planting. Meanwhile, it also supports future U-pick seasons, on-farm events, and value-added production as the food forest matures.

🌳 How the Community Can Be Part of This
As our farm grows, so does the opportunity for the community to participate in its success. One way to support long-term growth is through our Sponsor a Tree program, which helps fund planting, care, and infrastructure while creating a direct connection between supporters and the land.
This building will help support the care, harvest, and stewardship of those sponsored trees for decades to come.
Upcoming updates
With the permit issued, the next step is site preparation and concrete scheduling. While timelines are influenced by weather and contractor availability, this approval ensures we are ready to move forward as soon as conditions allow. We’ll continue sharing updates as construction milestones are reached and systems begin taking shape on the farm.
More updates will be coming as soon as we hit the next milestone.
Closing Line
This is one of the reasons we chose to build our farm with long-term systems in mind.
